Principle Cryoglobulins are immunoglobulins that complex and precipitate in the cold. A serum specimen is allowed to clot (preferably in a 37°C water bath), then divided into two aliquots, one refrigerated and one kept at room temperature. Both aliquots are observed for precipitation or gelling after 24, 48, and 72 hours.
Interpretation Cryoglobulins are proteins that are either monoclonal or polyclonal, with the latter possessing IgG activity. It has been suggested that in certain circumstances, immune complexes are cryoglobulins that can be deposited in the glomerulus and induce glomerulonephritis.

Cryoglobulins have been found in certain diseases, in particular systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and patients with HCV. The presence of cryoglobulins is directly related to renal disease.

Stability One hour at 37°C. Specimen must be kept warm until tested. Warm clotted blood must be processed within 1 hour of receipt.
