Principle HDL is measured in serum and plasma without prior separation, based on procedures developed by Izawa, et al. Cholesterol from chylomicrons, VLDL, and LDL particles is eliminated by cholesterol esterase, cholesterol oxidase and catalase. Cholesterol from HDL is released by a surfactant and then measured by similar reactions as for Total Cholesterol.
Interpretation With a concurrent analysis of cholesterol and triglyceride, a statistical assessment of risk for CHD can be made
Container type gel tube (gold or green top).
Amount to Collect 2mL
Sample type Blood
Special instructions Fasting required for triglyceride for calculation of LDL cholesterol.
Normal range
Low: < 40 mg/dL; Low
values indicate high risk
< 1.03 mmol/L
High: ≥ 60 mg/dL ≥ 1.55 mmol/L

Synonyms High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol;Lipid Panel (CHOL, HDL, LDL, TRIG);
Stability Separate serum or plasma within 3 hours. Serum stable at 2-8°C for 3 days.
Interferences Paraproteins can interfere with cholesterol-HDL determinations, yielding artificially low or undetectable results3.
