Interpretation Approximately 90-100% of patients with amebic liver abscess, 80-100% of patients with symptomatic intestinal amebiasis, and 10-50% of patients who are asymptomatic cyst passers have a positive reaction with serologic tests. These tests are relatively specific; however, patients may retain a positive result for 3-5 years in spite of successful treatment.

In patients with an acute presentation of less than 7 days, serology tests may be negative. If a diagnosis is still in question, it is recommended to repeat serology testing 5-7 days later.
