Additional information For suspected or confirmed food borne or wound botulism call MDL (510) 412-3700 and SFDPH (415) 554-2830.

Specimens: Pre-antitoxin serum 6 – 6 mL gold top gel tubes (red non-gel tubes acceptable); also collect (only as directed by the public health epidemiologist) stool-collected before antitoxin; vomitus; foods; other.

Perishable foods must be kept refrigerated or frozen until delivered to laboratory. (Do not freeze foods unless already frozen.) Refrigerate sera and stools. Hand deliver to Laboratory.

If infant botulism is suspected, call MDL Pediatrician at (510) 231-7600 before submitting specimen. The appropriate specimen is 10 gm of stool.
