Principle Inoculated selective medium is incubated and observed for growth of Neisseria gonorrhoeae for two days. No other organisms will be identified.
Interpretation The disease gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a Gram negative diplococcus. Sites of infection include mucous membranes lined by nonsquamous epithelium such as urethra and cervix and less frequently, the oropharynx and rectum.
Container type Obtain two swabs in transport media or lightly moistened calcium alginate swab in sterile tube.

Special instructions Alternately, inoculate specimens onto a warmed Thayer Martin plate, place in a candle jar, and bring directly to the Microbiology Lab (2M33). Media is available in the Microbiology Lab. Appropriate specimens include urethra, cervix, rectum, and/or throat.
Synonyms GC Only Culture;
Stability Hold swabs in transport media at room temperature and deliver as soon as possible to the Microbiology Lab. Hold inoculated Thayer Martin plates in a candle jar and bring directly to the Microbiology Lab as soon as possible. Neisseria gonorrhoeae does not survive well without increased carbon dioxide and is also highly susceptible to drying and temperature extremes.
