Principle |
Specimens are plated on media that support the growth of fungi. Negative cultures are reported after 4 weeks. Positive results are reported when fungi are recovered. |

Collection Instructions |
Using a sterile needle and syringe, aspirate material from undrained abscesses. Place the material into a sterile, screw-cap container. |

Special instructions |
Collection of specimens on swabs is discouraged for mycology cultures. Swabs of material from open wounds or draining lesions are frequently contaminated with environmental microorganisms, including fungi. If swabs must be used, send in a sterile, screw-cap tube with 2-3 drops of sterile saline or place swabs in transport medium. |
