Principle The Siemens Centaur assay is a two-site sandwich immunoassay using direct chemiluminometric technology.
Interpretation BNP is released from the ventricles of the heart in clinical conditions related to stretching and volume overload. In patients who present with shortness of breath and dyspnea, BNP measurements are used to assist in the diagnosis of congestive heart failure. BNP levels correlated to the severity of heart failure, as assessed by the New York Heart Association Classification (see table). High concentrations of BNP in patients with heart failure or ischemic heart disease correlate to a higher risk for cardiac death.

The following table shows ranges and median values (pg/mL) for BNP in patients in the different NYHA classifications of heart failure.

Classification 5th to 95th Percentile Median
NYHA I 15 to 499 95
NYHA II 10 to 1,080 222
NYHA III 38 to > 1,300 459
NYHA IV 147 to > 1,300 1,006
All CHF 22 to > 1,300 360
