| Principle |
This test establishes whether a prolonged PT or APTT is due to a factor deficiency or to the presence of an inhibitor. The test plasma is mixed with an equal volume of normal plasma. Correction of the PT or APTT to normal suggests a factor deficiency (the normal plasma has supplied the deficient factor). Lack of correction suggests the presence of an inhibitor (the normal plasma has been inhibited from correcting the prolonged PT or APTT). |
| Interpretation |
Some coagulation defects are caused by inhibitors of specific factors, rather than by the lack of a factor. |
