In House Availability Calculation with serum creatinine
Interpretation The estimated glomerular filtration rate is calculated from the following formula established from the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study(2,3), which is recommended by the National Kidney Foundation:

eGFR = 186.3 * (sCR)-1.154 * age-0.203 * (0.742 if female)

This calculated eGFR should be multiplied by 1.21 if the patient is African American. Because the chemistry laboratory does not always have access to race information, this correction must be applied by the user.

Because the accuracy of the eGFR calculation is poor when the creatinine is normal, we will only be reporting values if they reach the level of chronic kidney disease; i.e., < 60 mL/min/ 1.73 m2. The MDRD Study equation has not been validated in children (age < 18 years), pregnant women, the elderly (age > 70 years), or racial and ethnic subgroups other than Caucasians and African Americans.
