Principle A four part assay, based on the prothrombin time or partial thromboplastin time is employed, utilizing a known factor deficient substrate. Patient's % activity is based on the activity of an assayed reference plasma.
Interpretation Factor deficiencies may be congenital or acquired, e.g., hepatic disorders, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), or circulating inhibitors.

Amount to Collect 2.7 mL blood (fill tube completely)
Collection Instructions See Coagulation Procedures for instructions on collecting coagulation specimens.
Special instructions Indicate use of anticoagulant drugs on requisition slip.
Normal range Factors VIII, IX, XI: 50 - 150 %
Stability Specimen should be received in the lab within 4 hrs from collection to prevent deterioration of labile clotting factors.
