Principle RBC sedimentation in a standard system is affected by plasma proteins (especially fibrinogen and globulin) that increase in infections and inflammatory disorders. The automated sedimentation assay is based on a quantimetric photometry method.
Interpretation Elevated ESR generally suggests infection, inflammation or tissue destruction, but is sometimes observed in normal individuals (especially over age 65), and in pregnancy. Elevated ESR are also seen in malignancies and paraproteinurias (multiple myeloma).
