| Collection Instructions | Click here for information on correct samples to collect for viral testing Viral holding medium is available from Microbiology or from Specimen Receiving. Blood and urine accepted 0800-1430, other specimens until 2330. Specimens are preferably collected during the day shift and transported immediately to Microbiology. Specimens collected emergently from 2330-0600 should be refrigerated at 4°C until processed. Do NOT freeze. |

See Table for agents commonly causing various syndromes or consult laboratory, 415-353-1268. Positive results are reported as soon as virus is detected. Most cultures are held up to 14 days before being reported as negative, except for cultures for Herpes simplex virus only, which are held for 5 days. |
