| Additional information | Includes testing for metabolite Pentobarbital. Because of readier availability of the assay for pentobarbital, and because release of thiopental from fat depots after the patient has been on continuous iv therapy cannot be controlled, pentobarbital is preferred for sustaining barbiturate coma (thiopental is partially metabolized to pentobarbital). In a patient receiving only thiopental therapy, a pentobarbital level which exceeds 2.0 mg/L indicates hepatic toxicity.
