Patient Preparation Any pancreatic enzyme supplements should be discontinued for 5 days before testing of an adult, for 1 day in a child with cystic fibrosis.

An 8 hour fast before specimen collection is preferred.
Collection Instructions The patient should be given Bentiromide after an overnight fast (500 mg for an adult or 14 mg/kg for a child) and the urine collected for the next 6 hours.

Additional information PABA is the end-product measured in the Bentiromide test for pancreatic insufficiency. This test is NOT accurate if the creatinine exceeds 2.0 mg/dL, and a false-negative result may be obtained due to drug and/or dietary interference.
