Collection Instructions By appointment only, contact Hematology at x3-1747. Collect samples on Monday-Thursday only and transport on ice to Hematology (M524) before 1000 hours for immediate processing.

As this specific assay is not available through LabCorp, it is available to B&T patients only if the ordering physician provides prior authorization from B&T.

Wrap sample in paper towels to prevent freezing and ship on wet ice to Oakland Childrens Hospital via MCI courier.

If not received on ice, the specimen must be
accompanied by a travel control sample to verify the adequacy of transportation conditions or will be refused as unsuitable for assay.

Additional information This test, which is performed by the Special Hematology Laboratory of Children's Hospital of Oakland, replaces the classical RBC Osmotic Fragility test, and requires a Reticulocyte Count as well as a CBC for interpretation. This test is not recommended for children < 6 months old. Cells are tested over
a gradient from 100-500 mosmol/kg.
