This test detects both IgG and IgM antibodies, and has no role in diagnosing acute hepatitis, the prevalence of anti-HAV IgG in the U.S. approximating 50%. It is useful in determining immunity from prior infection, e.g., in patients chronically infused with Factor VIII or IX concentrates for the treatment of Hemophilia A or B or at risk from preexisting chronic liver disease due to HBV or HCV.

Positive results are automatically forwarded to California Public Health per regulations. However, this does not absolve the ordering provider from any additional reporting if such is required.
