| Additional information | Used to screen pregnant females for impaired glucose tolerance by using a single 1 hour postprandial glucose level. The American Diabetes Association, which previously recommended universal screening of pregnant women with this test, now recommends that screening be based upon risk factors, suggesting that it is not cost effective to screen women < 25 years old who are of normal body weight, have no personal or strong family history of diabetes nor glycosuria, have no history of poor obstetrical outcome, and are not members of ethnic or racial groups known to have high prevalence of diabetes mellitus (Diabetes Care 2004; 27:S5-S10). Patients who have a positive screening test should be retested with the standard tolerance test for pregnancy (OGTP) employing a 100 g dose. For dosing information, see entry for Glucose Tolerance Test. |
