Fungal Culture, yeast
|Test group||Fungal Culture|
|In House Availability||Set up daily, day and evening shifts|
|Sample type||Vaginal fluid, Wound, Oral|
|Critical value||Biphasic fungus (e.g. Coccidiodes immitis) isolated.|
|Stability||Refrigerated 24 hours|
|Additional information||Preferable when Candida species are the only fungi of concern, e.g., in post-op wound infection. For thrush, order KOH-Calcofluor White Stain (P250) instead. Separate fungal culture of urine for yeast is unnecessary; they will be detected by routine bacterial culture. Clinically active vaginal yeast infection is readily detected on Gram stain; culture is generally unnecessary except for isolation of the organism and susceptibility testing in cases of treatment failure. Cultures incubated 4 days.
Differentiation of Candida dublinensis from the biochemically and clinically similar species Candida albicans is performed on request only.
