| Collection Instructions | Guidelines for submission of peritoneal fluid (abdominal fluid, ascitic fluid, dialysis fluid) for bacterial culture: Inoculate 10ml into an anaerobic blood culture bottle at the patient's bedside for optimal growth and recovery of organisms. Additional fluid may be submitted in a sterile tube, which allows for gram stain to be performed and faster identification of bacteria present at high concentrations. | Container type | A transport vial is available from Materiel Services for liquid specimens, including transtracheal aspirates. A Red top vacutainer-if filled completely is suitable for pus or other liquid specimens. Use charcoal transport medium for swabs. |
