Additional information This non-specific marker of malignancy is highly sensitive for the presence of both malignant and non-malignant (e.g., tuberculous) ascites, sensitivity in one study attaining over 98%, with a specificity of nearly 96% (Collazos J et al. Scand J Clin Lab Invest 1992;52:201). High levels may be attained and correlate with the amount of intraperitoneal fluid.
