Streptococcus pneumoniae Antigen, urine TEST NOT OFFERED AT UCSF
|Test code||None - Do Not Order|
|Synonyms||s. pneumo Ag;|
|Additional information||The sensitivity of urinary Streptococcus pneumoniae antigen is only 50-80% based on several studies, and is not high enough to discontinue empiric antibiotic coverage of clinically suspected S. pneumoniae based on a negative test result, particularly in patients who have already received antibiotics prior to presentation. As a sendout test, a positive result would not be available in a timely fashion to direct antibiotic therapy. Therefore, this test is not useful in patient management as UCSF. Respiratory (sputum, BAL, pleural fluid) and blood cultures are recommended to workup suspected S. pneumoniae respiratory infections.
Therefore the Infectious Disease Management Program has determined that this test should not be offered.
