| Patient Preparation | Patient should be fasting (12 hours) and should avoid taking vitamin C supplements for 24 hours prior to draw. |
| Collection Instructions | Place green top tube on wet ice immediately, transport blood tube on ice to the specimen processing section of Clinical Laboratories asap. |

| Processing notes | Centrifuge sample at 4C in a refrigerated centrifuge for 10 minutes at 2000 rpm within 1 hour of draw. IMPORTANT: After centrifugation, bring the plasma specimen to Chemistry so the pH can be adjusted to a pH of 1.0 to 3.5 (ideal range is 2.3 to 2.7) with approximately 10 uL concentrated (12N) HCL per 1.0 mL of plasma. Freeze sample at -20C and send frozen in a plastic vial on dry ice to China Basin sendouts. Do not allow to thaw. Order Mayo test # 81408. |
