AlgorithmDescription Using a screening CBC, one can use the MCV to decide whether testing for iron deficiency (MCV<80) or vitamin B12 deficiency (MCV>100) should be pursued. Cutoffs vary widely in the literature in regards to a definitive diagnosis so where appropriate, these have been indicated. There may be a considerable amount of overlap in testing and nutritional anemias may occur in the setting of chronic inflammation which will alter the typical lab values expected.
