The Clinical Laboratories at UCSF Medical Center offer one-year Clinical Laboratory Specialist Training Programs in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology, and Microbiology. Course work will prepare students to independently perform a wide array of laboratory tests in their chosen specialty. Using the newest methodologies and state of the art automated analyzers, graduates of the programs will provide test results used in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.
The testing of human specimens by Clinical Laboratory Specialists plays a crucial role in patient care. Specialists who excel in the laboratory utilize high levels of interpersonal skills, self-direction, critical thinking and task management. These skills culminate in valid, accurate and precise test results. The role of the Clinical Laboratory Specialist is vital to patient care because reported test results influence the decisions made and the care given by physicians to their patients.
Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the State of California Department of Health Services licensing examination for the specialty in which they obtained training. Those who pass the examination will engage in the performance of high complexity laboratory testing, becoming valued members of the healthcare team.
