Base salaries for residents and fellows are set by the University of California according to Post-Graduate Year (PGY) level (current levels listed below). It is current policy of the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine to provide a supplemental housing allowance of $4,000 per year for each year that the individual is engaged in post-graduate training at UCSF in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology. This is in addition to a UCSF Medical Center housing supplement of $8,472.00 per year. A resident spending four years at UCSF to meet eligibility requirements for combined AP/CP board certification would thus receive the $12,472.00 combined supplement for four years, as in the following example:

All residents and fellows also receive an annual educational allowance of $1,500, and free membership in the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the American Society of Investigative Pathology, with online subscriptions to the societies’ journals.
Vacation & Educational Leave
Residents are granted three weeks vacation and one week educational leave per year. Leave time must be coordinated with the Residency Director. Attendance at scientific meetings at which the resident is presenting a poster or platform presentation of research findings is not counted as vacation or educational leave.
Health & Disability Insurance
Housestaff receive health, dental, and vision, and disability insurance plans offered through the School of Medicine. These plans are designed exclusively for the residents on the UCSF campus. For health care, there is a choice between a ‘fee for service’ and a managed care plan. The premiums for all RESIDENTS and CLINICAL FELLOWS are automatically paid by the salary funding source. For Residents/Fellows who choose the PPO (Blue Cross) plan, a monthly premium contribution is required. The monthly premium contributions are as follows:

Millberry Union & Fitness Center
Millberry Union is UCSF’s campus union. It is located on the north side of Parnassus Avenue, across from Moffitt Hospital. Millberry Union presents cultural, recreational, and fitness programs to the campus community and general public. Millberry Union also provides a variety of facilities and services including a bookstore, barbershop, convenience and gift stores, a flower stand, a variety of food service options, a computer store, copy service, meeting rooms, music and entertainment rooms, and ticket services. The Medical Center Bookstore is also in Millberry Union. Millberry Union also houses a state-of-the-art fitness center that includes a swimming pool, basketball, squash, and racquetball courts, exercise rooms, saunas, and locker rooms. Fitness programs, including aerobics, Pilates, Tai Chi, Yoga, are scheduled to accommodate UCSF employees. Personal trainers are also available. Access to the fitness center requires membership in Millberry Programs and Services (MPS) to which Housestaff are entitled. In fact, the School of Medicine subsidizes the membership fee for Housestaff who elect to join (approximately a 30% discount on full membership price).
