Overview
Tier 2. This course is designed to provide the medical student with a fundamental understanding of the principles and practices of Clinical Microbiology. Through direct observation of benchwork, weekly didactic sessions, teaching rounds, and other learning material, the student will receive instruction in the following areas of Microbiology: Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Infectious Disease Serology, Virology, and Molecular Diagnostics. Antimicrobial agents and methods used for susceptibility testing will also be discussed. The student will participate in daily work rounds in Bacteriology, contribute to weekly ID/Microbiology plate rounds, and work with the Laboratory Medicine Resident to investigate unusual organisms and approve test requests. There will be an opportunity for hands-on experience and a research project depending on student interest. The expectation is that each student will gain an in-depth understanding of how microorganisms are identified in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory and how to effectively use the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory to diagnose infectious diseases.
