The fellow spends six months in one of this country’s premier blood centers and six months on the transfusion service of one of its foremost university medical centers. The program is ACGME approved.

Blood Centers of the Pacific (BCP) collects approximately 100,000 donations of blood and distributes 150,000 units each year to 51 hospitals in a large segment of northern California. Fellows are rotated through all blood bank departments, assuming increasing responsibility as they learn. Instruction is through tutorials, conferences, department meetings, and assigned reading. BCP has a superb red cell antibody reference laboratory and one of the country’s foremost research laboratories in transfusion medicine. UCSF offers the experiences of a transfusion service in a large university hospital (50,000 units a year) with a wealth of complex services, including transfusion service, hematopoietic progenitor lab, and donor center.

Candidates for certification in Transfusion Medicine must be board certified or board-eligible in clinical hematology, clinical pathology or anesthesia.  Candidates for the fellowship must be licensed in the State of California to practice medicine.
