This fellowship provides experience in all aspects of blood banking/transfusion medicine. The fellow spends six months in one of this country’s premier blood banks and six months on the transfusion service of one of its foremost university medical centers. The program is ACGME approved.

Blood Centers of the Pacific (BCP) collects approximately 120,000 donations of blood each year for hospitals in a large segment of northern California. Fellows are rotated through all blood bank departments, assuming increasing responsibility as they learn. Instruction is through tutorials, conferences, department meetings, and assigned reading. BCP has a superb red cell antibody reference laboratory and one of the country’s foremost research laboratories in transfusion medicine. UCSF offers the experiences of a transfusion service in a large university hospital (50,000 units a year) with a wealth of complex services, including transplantation of bone marrow, stem cell, liver, kidney, heart and lung. UCSF has a Specialized Center of Research (SCOR) in Transfusion Medicine, one of two in the country directed by Pearl Toy MD.

Requirements

Candidates for certification in Transfusion Medicine must complete a one-year Transfusion Medicine fellowship and be certified or board-eligible in clinical hematology, clinical pathology or anesthesia. Candidates for the fellowship must be licensed in the State of California to practice medicine.

Stipend

Support is commensurate with the candidate's level of training.
