Education

Residency Programs

Training is offered in straight anatomic pathology (AP), straight clinical pathology (CP), and combined AP/CP.

Fellowship Programs

A number of Advanced training fellowships are available on a competitive basis.

Continuing Medical Education

Continuing Medical Education activities include our Mechanisms of Disease Conference, Laboratory Medicine Grand Rounds, and the Current Issues in Surgical Pathology annual conference.

Clinical Laboratory Scientist Training Program

The one-year Clinical Laboratory Specialist Training Programs in Clinical Chemistry, Cytogenetics, Hematology, Immunohematology, and Microbiology at the UCSF Medical Center combines didactic and practical instruction to prepare students for challenging and exciting careers in the clinical laboratories.

Other Training

We provide a training program in Phlebotomy, and for Medical Students, we offer 4th year elective rotations in Pathology as well as a year long Post-Sophomore Fellowship training in Pathology.

UCSF Department of Pathology Resident.

Educational opportunities offered through the UCSF Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine range from instructional courses for medical technologists to continuing medical education for senior physicians, and include ACGME-accredited residency programs in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, as well as subspecialty fellowships in Dermatopathology, Neuropathology, Cytopathology, Hematopathology, GI Pathology, Transplant Pathology, General Surgical Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, and Transfusion Medicine. These programs draw on diverse mix of clinical cases and an equally diverse faculty based not only at UCSF Medical Center, but also at San Francisco General Hospital & Trauma Center and the San Francisco V.A. Medical Center to offer unparalleled clinical and research training opportunities.

Our facilities include the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center (the only Comprehensive Cancer Center in Northern California), the UCSF Children's Hospital, and a new state-of-the-art 35,000 square foot Clinical Laboratory Facility at China Basin that includes comprehensive Microbiology and Virology Laboratories along with new Cytogenetics and Molecular Diagnostics facilities.
