Immunostain Update: Diagnosis of Metastatic Breast Carcinoma, Emphasizing the Distinction from Gynecologic Cancers

Overview

Determining the primary origin of tumors arising in metastatic sites or lymph nodes can often be difficult in women with known history of breast cancer and/or gynecologic cancer, particularly since estrogen and progesterone receptor profiles may be similar in tumors of either origin. Several new immunohistochemical markers of breast and of gynecologic differentiation are now available. This lecture will review the diagnostic value of these markers, their limitations/pitfalls, and a practical approach to using selected markers in this setting.
