The UCSF Clinical Laboratory includes comprehensive testing in routine and special hematology. The service includes resident, fellow and attending physicians in laboratory medicine who work with the clinical services to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients with hematologic disorders.

Among the services offered by the UCSF Clinical Labs (or the can be referred for testing through UCSF) are:

  • Cell Count and Differential, includes resident/faculty review when abnormal cells are identified
  • Urinalysis, including dipstick urinalysis and microscopy when indicated
  • Semen Analysis

Complete Blood Count (CBC) Analysis and Differential

  • WBC and differential
  • RBC
  • RBC indices
  • Platelet count
  • Blood smear morphology

RBC abnormalities

  • Blood smear morphology
  • Ektacytometry (replaces osmotic fragility)
  • Hemoglobinopathy evaluation (HPLC, electrophoresis)
  • Unstable Hemoglobins (Screen, G-6PD testing)
  • Reticulocyte Count
  • Molecular testing for inherited disorders
    • Thalassemia
    • Hemoglobinopathy

WBC abnormalities/Stem cell disorders
