Description: This ACGME accredited program is designed to train academically
oriented cytopathologists. Two positions are offered. Fellowships include
both clinical and research training. Clinical training includes all aspects of
clinical cytopathology including gynecologic cytology specimens (about 15,000 a
year), fine needle aspiration (about 2,500) and a full spectrum of other
non-gynecologic specimens (about 4,000). An active pathology based fine needle
aspiration (FNA) clinic is present where fellows have the opportunity to
perform FNAs. In addition, we have an active onsite adequacy assessment
service with samples obtained by a variety of imaging modalities including EUS
and EBUS as well as ultrasound and CT. Fellows review and interpret FNAs and
interact closely with clinicians from diverse medical specialties.
Immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry and a variety of molecular techniques are
available for use as needed on clinical specimens. Research interests of the
faculty include fine needle aspiration and molecular techniques, as well as
gynecologic, gastrointestinal, urologic, pulmonary, head and neck, and breast
