Transfusion Medicine Fellowship - Mayo Clinic
BLOOD BANKING/TRANSFUSION MEDICINE - Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) Mayo Clinic is seeking a Transfusion Medicine Fellow for the 2010-2011 and 2011 - 2 academic years. Mayo Clinic's one-year accredited Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking Fellowship offers extensive clinical and laboratory experience. The Transfusion Medicine Division at Mayo Clinic in Rochester supports liver, renal, heart, pancreas, lung and bone marrow transplantation, as well as stem cell collection, high-risk neonatal and obstetrical programs and cardiovascular surgery. Mayo Clinic's Division of Transfusion Medicine provides blood and blood products for Saint Mary's Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital. These hospitals have a combined total of approximately 1,950 beds. The division functions as both a blood collection center and a transfusion service. Each year more than 30,000 units of blood are collected from 15,000 local donors. More than 140,000 products are administered. Transfusion Medicine performs 63,000 red cell compatibility tests and 70,000 ABO/Rh blood typings annually. Approximately 3,000 therapeutic apheresis procedures are performed each year. This training program encompasses the full range of blood center and transfusion medicine activities, including donor recruitment and donation, compatibility testing, advanced red cell serology, component production, progenitor cell and cellular therapy laboratory, therapeutic and donor apheresis, cell salvage and intraoperative autotransfusion, and histocompatability laboratory. Experience in transfusion transmitted disease testing, coagulation testing, and regional blood banking is also offered. Your training will consist of a mixture of didactic lectures, wet laboratory work, and hands on patient care and management experiences. This fellowship program prepares you for a career in a major academic center, community or hospital blood bank or as a research investigator in transfusion medicine. Qualifications and Application Process Applicants must be a physician who has American citizenship or holds a permanent immigrant visa and is certified or eligible for certification in pathology, medicine, surgery, anesthesiology or pediatrics.
