Surg Path Fellowship 2010 - LAC + USC

SURGICAL PATHOLOGY FELLOWSHIP
Fiscal Year 2010-11
Two Positions Available

The Surgical Pathology Fellowship of the LAC+USC Healthcare Network has two
positions available for FY10-11. Both positions are funded at the PGY5 level;
these final two items (of seven total FTE) are funded through the USC
Department of Pathology. The LAC+USC Surgical Pathology Fellowship Training
Program has recently received five years Continued Full Accreditation by the
ACGME.

Description: The fellowship training program in Surgical Pathology includes
experience at the new Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center where there are
annually 22,000 surgical accessions and 2,200 frozen section/intraoperative
consultations per year. Fellows are given responsibilities that are similar to
junior faculty, where they supervise junior residents in grossing specimens,
microscopic review and sign out, preparing and conducting clinicopathologic
correlation conferences and tumor boards, and performing intraoperative
consultations and frozen sections. The fellows also rotate through the Norris
Cancer Hospital, where there are 3,300 additional surgical pathology accessions
and 1,200 additional intraoperative consultations/frozen sections per year. The
fellows concentrate on oncologic surgical pathology at the Norris Cancer
Hospital, developing grossing skills and refining microscopic signout skills.
In general, three elective months are available for fellows to choose from a
variety of anatomic pathology electives. These include GI-liver service and a
surgical pathology consultation service that draws 4,000 outside cases per
year. 

Requirements: The candidate must have completed 3 years of Anatomic Pathology
training or 4 years of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology training by the
beginning of the fellowship training. The candidate must be a resident in good
standing at their primary training program. The candidate must have a
California Medical License by July 1st of their training year. A letter from
the resident’s Program Director must document what rotations the resident has
taken, and a comment of completion of these rotations with competence. Two
additional letters from the resident’s Surgical Pathology faculty is
recommended. We will accept the CAP Standardized Application for Pathology
Fellowships form.

Stipends:  Support is at a PGY5 level for those who have completed four or more
years of training. For the fiscal year 2009-2010, the salary of a PGY5 was
$61,443.48.
